At first, only two lightsabers colours were introduced in Star Wars: A New Hope; blue for members of the Jedi Order (the good guys) and red for the Sith (the bad guys). However, after Luke lost his blue lightsaber and forged a new one, the green blade colour was introduced. Fast forward to the Attack of the Clones, Mace Windu also unveiled his purple blade. Since then (as the Star Wars canon progressed), more lightsaber colours have continued to appear.
As with many other things in the Star Wars universe, there is a deeper meaning behind the different colours lightsaber blades have, and while each colour and blade is personalised to its wielder, some colours are more powerful than others.
Below, we shall be taking a look at some of the most powerful lightsaber colour meanings and the characters who famously wielded them.
White (Ahsoka Tano)
When Ahsoka Tano first appeared in The Clone Wars wielding her two white lightsabers, she immediately caught the eye of fans who have been clamouring for more information about the unique and incredibly rare white colour of her lightsaber blades.
White lightsabers are not only rare but incredibly powerful. To create her weapons, Ahsoka had to heal and purify the kyber crystals from an Inquisitor’s lightsaber (a weapon which was very hard to come by). The purification process turned the red (corrupted) crystals white, which is a colour associated with purity, goodness, truth, justice and power.
The white lightsabers are also a physical representation of Ahsoka’s strength as a Jedi, and being able to wield this powerful weapon is a testament to her skills as a warrior.
Yellow (Rey Skywalker)
After burying the blue Skywalker lightsaber, Rey ignited a new yellow lightsaber which was nothing short of impressive. There is a lot of symbolism and power behind this lightsaber colour. First, the standard yellow lightsaber is a first for any Star Wars character (we’ve only ever seen templers using the unique yellow lightsaber pikes).
The colour also symbolises a lot for Rey’s character. Rey started out as an innocent character who lacked knowledge of the Force, but when she ignited her gorgeous yellow lightsaber for the first time, it signified her readiness to embrace becoming a Jedi. The yellow colour represents her connection to the living Force and her hope for a better future.
Blue (Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Skywalkers)
The blue lightsaber colour (Skywalker lightsaber) was the first ever to hit our screens, and while it is the most common lightsaber colour, it is also very powerful. This is why many of the incredibly skilled and powerful Jedi Guardians wielded blue lightsabers.
The colour represents justice, truth, loyalty and hope.
Purple (Mace Windu)
The iconic purple blade that Jedi Master Mace Windu wielded definitely stood out from the blue and green typically used by his fellow members of the Jedi Order. This purple colour has been associated with Windu’s connection with the Force, which most believe is stronger in him than any other Jedi.
A purple lightsaber colour is associated with strength, power, complexity, transformation, and moral ambiguity, which makes sense since Mace Windu had extensive experience with both the light and dark side of the Force. Individuals (like Mace Windu) who wield purple lightsabers are powerful enough to understand and harness knowledge from the dark side without getting corrupted.
Black (The Mandalorian Darksaber)
The black lightsaber, or the Mandalorian Darksaber was the weapon that Tarre Vizsla (the first Mandalorian Jedi) designed. The Mandalorians are fierce and powerful people, and this one-of-a-kind Darksaber served as a symbol of their courage and strength. There are a lot of meanings associated with the black blade colour of the Darksaber, but the most common ones are death, violence, power, and refinement.
The Darksaber is considered one of the strongest (if not the strongest) for a number of reasons. First, it is made of Beskar, which is one of the few materials that can resist the strike of a lightsaber. Second, the blade of the Darksaber is so powerful that it can cut through another lightsaber and deflect blaster bolts. It is also incredibly difficult to destroy, and it can be used to channel the rage of a Mandalorian into more powerful attacks.
So, what is the strongest lightsaber colour?
Whilst every lightsaber colour is strong in its own right, the black lightsaber or the Mandalorian Darksaber would have to take the win here. Apart from being made from Beskar, which is one of the strongest materials in the galaxy, the blade of this lightsaber can cut through anything, including another lightsaber.
The Darksaber also channels the emotional state of its wielder, which means that the stronger the negative emotions of its wielder are, the more powerful the blade will be.
Conclusion
Star Wars lightsabers come in an array of different colours, and while the strength of a lightsaber typically comes from its wielder’s connection to the Force, the white, yellow, blue, purple and black lightsaber blades are known to be the strongest.
