5 Simple Rules for Playground Safety for Kids of All Ages

Kids of different ages develop their physical and cognitive skills at different rates. They should play on equipment that is age-appropriate.

Also, it is important for kids to be dressed properly while playing on playground equipment. This includes removing clothing that has drawstrings, as these pose a strangulation risk.

    • 2 2. Don’t Run
    • 3 3. Take Turns
    • 4 4. Don’t Intrude
    • 5 5. Be Patient

    1. Don’t Overcrowd the Equipment

When kids play on playground equipment that is not sized for their age and development level, injuries can occur. Smaller children with less upper body strength and hand grip size could easily lose their balance or fall off of equipment designed for older kids. Having equipment separated into separate zones can help keep kids of all ages safe.

It is also important to encourage children to use the equipment as it is intended for 안전놀이터. When children climb on monkey bars when they aren’t meant to, for example, it could cause abrasions or other serious injuries. Similarly, sliding down a slide sideways or with limbs hanging over the sides of the structure can cause severe injury.

Children should also be encouraged to play in designated areas and form lines when waiting for a piece of equipment. This helps ensure that all kids are given a chance to play and reduces the risk of physical violence or verbal aggression.

    2. Don’t Run

While kids are often naturally adventurous and playful, that doesn’t mean they can’t hurt themselves or others while on playground equipment. When playing with other children, they should learn to play safely by taking turns and not pushing or roughhousing. They should sit down on swings and seesaws rather than trying to stand or jump off them. They should also avoid climbing on equipment that’s wet. Shoes should be securely tied and clothing should not have drawstrings, cords or neck scarves that could get caught on equipment.

It’s also important that kids know to test the temperature of playground equipment before touching it with their hands. In the summertime, metal and aluminum slides, handrails, and steps can become uncomfortably hot. Skin contact with these surfaces can lead to blisters and severe burns in seconds or minutes. Kids should also remember to wash their hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer when they’re done using the playground. This will help prevent the spread of germs that can cause illness and infections. They should also apply sunscreen when they go outside to avoid sunburn.

    3. Take Turns

Turn taking is a vital social skill that children need to learn for all kinds of activities, including playing games, using toys, and even having conversations. It teaches children to consider the needs of others, which can help prevent conflicts like sibling fights and schoolyard bullying.

Children who don’t take turns can overcrowd pieces of equipment, which can be dangerous for kids and adults alike. It is important to remind children of this rule, especially during child-initiated play, so that they understand that everyone has the right to use a piece of playground equipment at a time.

Using simple language to explain the importance of taking turns can be an effective way to teach it to children, as well as creating a mnemonic or rhyme to help them remember it. You can also try using a visual cue, such as a sand or water timer, to demonstrate how long children should wait for their turn to use equipment. This will give kids an opportunity to practice this skill, which they will need to do on a daily basis as they grow into teenagers and adults.

    4. Don’t Intrude

Kids need to be supervised on the playground, at least when they are using equipment. Kids should never use equipment that is not appropriate for their age level, which can lead to injury. Kids should be encouraged to ask for help if they are struggling with equipment, such as the monkey bars.

Rough play and bullying are not safe for anyone, even on the playground. While teasing and name calling may seem harmless, these behaviors can escalate into more serious forms of bullying that can impact kids’ self-esteem and confidence. Kids should be encouraged to treat their peers with kindness and respect, as well as include everyone in group games.

Kids should be encouraged to wear clothing appropriate for playgrounds, such as closed-toed shoes and shirts with sleeves that can’t get caught in equipment. Oversized clothing, hoodies and costumes with drawstrings pose a strangulation risk. These are also tripping hazards, as kids can easily trip over them on equipment and other children. Adding shade to the playground during peak sun exposure can reduce these tripping risks, too.

    5. Be Patient

It is important to teach kids to be patient, even when they want to use the playground equipment that others are already using. This will help them learn to take turns and avoid arguments and disruptions during play. It will also teach them that they have to wait for things in life, such as a turn on a ride at a theme park or a seat at a restaurant.

Rough play, pushing other children or fighting is not acceptable on the playground and can cause injuries. It is important to emphasize that verbal violence, teasing and bullying are also not permitted. It is also important to establish rules that emphasize personal space and treating everyone fairly.

It is also important to encourage kids to drink water and take breaks at least every hour. This will help them stay hydrated and prevent heat exhaustion, which can also be dangerous for them on the playground. They should also wear clothes that fit well, and be sure to remove any drawstrings or cords from their clothing before playing on the equipment as they can pose a hazard for strangulation.
